Nearly a week after the deadly shooting at the prestigious Brown University in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, authorities have confirmed that the suspected perpetrator has been found dead. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the body of the 48-year-old suspect was discovered inside a warehouse in the neighboring northeastern state of New Hampshire, not far from the original crime scene. Investigators reported that the individual was identified through rental vehicle surveillance footage, which allowed police to track his movements and obtain his personal information.
Authorities stated that the suspect had studied physics at Brown University for approximately one year but had not maintained any ties to the institution since 2003 and had recently been living in Miami. The attack at Brown took place inside the Barus & Holley engineering building while exams were underway, resulting in the deaths of two students. The incident deeply shocked the university community and prompted an immediate response focused on safety, counseling, and emotional support for students, faculty, and staff. Law enforcement agencies continue working to clarify the circumstances and motives behind the attack.
Investigators have also linked the suspect to a separate fatal shooting in the state of Massachusetts. In that case, nuclear science professor Nuno F. Gomes Loureiro was shot and killed at his home. According to Massachusetts authorities, the victim and the suspect are believed to have studied together at the same university in Lisbon between 1995 and 2000. This connection is part of ongoing investigative efforts to better understand the personal and academic background surrounding the crimes, although no official motive has been publicly confirmed.
Federal officials further indicated that the suspect had been living in the United States since 2017, having obtained a visa and permanent residency through the U.S. government’s green card lottery program. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that the visa program would be suspended immediately following instructions from President Donald Trump, a decision that has sparked renewed political debate amid the national response to the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, attention remains focused on honoring the victims and supporting the affected communities. Authorities and mental health organizations also emphasized the importance of seeking help during moments of emotional distress. Anyone experiencing psychological crisis or suicidal thoughts, or who knows someone who may be struggling, is strongly encouraged to contact local emergency services or crisis support hotlines, underscoring that reaching out for help is a vital step toward care and prevention.
