A tragic incident off the Greek island of Chios left at least 15 people dead after a collision between a Greek Coast Guard vessel and a boat carrying migrants. The crash occurred in the Aegean Sea, one of Europe’s most dangerous and heavily monitored migration routes. According to Greek authorities, the collision happened during an interception attempt after the migrant boat departed from the nearby Turkish coast. The impact severely damaged the vessel, causing several people to fall into the water.

Emergency services rescued 25 migrants alive and transported them to shore, where they received medical care and humanitarian assistance. Their nationalities were not immediately confirmed due to the circumstances surrounding the rescue. In addition to the migrant fatalities, two members of the Greek Coast Guard were injured during the operation. Both officers were taken to a local hospital and remain under medical observation, officials said.

A Coast Guard official stated that suspected human smugglers operating the migrant boat allegedly steered directly toward the patrol vessel, triggering the collision. Authorities said the inflatable boat had been ordered to stop and turn back prior to the crash, but those instructions were ignored. Greek officials reported that the migrants were traveling in a rubber dinghy, a type of vessel commonly used by smuggling networks because of its low cost and maneuverability, despite its extreme vulnerability at sea.

The incident once again highlights the severe risks faced by people attempting irregular crossings in the Aegean Sea. Thousands attempt the journey each year, often fleeing conflict, poverty, or persecution, and many rely on criminal networks to facilitate the passage. The Greek government reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking networks and strengthening maritime surveillance.

Officials also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and confirmed that a full investigation into the incident has been launched. Humanitarian organizations renewed calls for safer migration routes and greater international cooperation, warning that the lack of legal pathways continues to drive people toward perilous journeys across the sea.

The deadly collision off Chios adds to a growing list of fatal incidents in the eastern Mediterranean, where migration pressures, border enforcement, and humanitarian concerns remain deeply intertwined, often with devastating human consequences.
