International diplomacy has taken a step that could mark a turning point in the Middle East. The United Nations Security Council approved in New York a resolution aimed at securing peace in the Gaza Strip, based on a plan initially put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump and now supported by 13 of the Council’s 15 member states.

The document calls for the deployment of an international peacekeeping force to monitor the ceasefire, protect civilians, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. For many governments, this initiative represents a chance to stabilize a region long affected by blockades, military escalations, and a persistent humanitarian crisis. However, the proposal is far from generating unanimous support on the ground.

Hamas and other Palestinian groups view the initiative as a form of “international guardianship” that could restrict their political and military influence. They warn that a multinational force, if closely coordinated with the Israeli government, risks becoming an instrument “serving the occupation” rather than a neutral actor.

They also fear that such a deployment might reinforce the current status quo without addressing the deeper causes of the conflict: territorial disputes, sovereignty, blockades, and the political future of Gaza.

In response to these concerns, UN diplomats emphasize that any deployed force must have a clear mandate and strong guarantees of impartiality. If ultimately created, the international mission would need to operate “under the full authority and direct supervision of the United Nations” and coordinate exclusively with recognized Palestinian institutions, avoiding subordination to the interests of any single party.

The real challenge will be turning the resolution into an effective presence on the ground—one capable of earning public trust, preventing new escalations, and opening the door to a broader political process that goes beyond a fragile and temporary ceasefire.
