Former FC Barcelona star Dani Alves, now 42, could be on the verge of one of the most unexpected comebacks in recent football history. The Brazilian is reportedly considering a return to professional play after acquiring Sporting Clube de São João de Ver, a Portuguese club competing in the third division, and weighing the possibility of signing a six-month playing contract. Since his release from prison in March 2024, Alves has resumed regular training.

Confident in his physical condition, he believes he could be match-ready within roughly 30 days, a claim that has sparked debate given his age and the long period away from competitive football. Alves last played an official match on January 8, 2023, while representing Pumas UNAM in Mexico. Shortly afterward, he was arrested in Barcelona, leading his club to terminate his contract and resulting in more than a year in custody.

A Spanish court later overturned the conviction on appeal, ruling that the evidence was insufficient to overcome the presumption of innocence. Since then, Alves has entered a new phase in his football career, combining his role as a club investor with medium-term plans to obtain a coaching license. He is supported in this project by Brazilian investors, who are backing both the club’s management and its sporting vision. Whether a return to the pitch will actually take place remains uncertain.

At 42 and after a prolonged absence from competition, significant physical challenges remain. However, the mere possibility of seeing Alves back in action has already generated considerable media attention, reopening discussions about second chances and career finales in elite sport. For now, no official confirmation has been made, but the scenario adds an unexpected chapter to the career of one of football’s most decorated players, suggesting that his story may not yet be finished.
