Vietnam has launched one of the most ambitious sports infrastructure projects in the world: the construction of the Trong Dong Stadium, a mega-structure that, if completed as planned, will have a capacity of 135,000 spectators and become the largest stadium on the planet. The venue will be built in Thuong Phuc, south of Hanoi, as part of a much broader urban development that includes an Olympic sports city.

The initiative aims to transform the area into a new hub for economic, athletic, and cultural activity. The architectural design draws inspiration from the Dong Son drum, one of Vietnam’s most important historical symbols. This ancient cultural icon serves as the conceptual foundation of the stadium, blending national identity with futuristic design. The project goes beyond the main arena, incorporating training facilities, commercial spaces, and residential zones within the larger sports complex. Its scale positions it as a comprehensive urban development rather than a standalone stadium.

The estimated investment places the project among the most expensive sports infrastructures ever proposed. If executed as outlined, it would surpass the cost of several high-profile stadiums built in recent decades. Funding is being led by Vingroup, one of Vietnam’s largest corporate conglomerates. Its chairman, Pham Nhat Vuong, is widely regarded as the wealthiest individual in the country and has spearheaded major initiatives across real estate, technology, and automotive sectors.

Strategically, the stadium could elevate Vietnam’s position as a potential host for major international sporting events. A venue of this magnitude would significantly expand the country’s capacity to organize global competitions. At present, the Rungrado May Day Stadium in North Korea, with a capacity of approximately 114,000 seats, is considered the largest in the world.

If the Trong Dong Stadium reaches its projected 135,000 seats, it would set a new global benchmark. Beyond sports, the development reflects a broader ambition to project a modern and forward-looking image of Vietnam on the international stage. The fusion of cultural symbolism and large-scale infrastructure signals a strategic vision for national branding. For now, global attention will focus on the progress of construction. If completed as announced, the Trong Dong Stadium could redefine the concept of monumental arenas in the 21st century.
