Formula 1 has officially confirmed a new rule for the Qatar Grand Prix: each set of tires will be limited to a maximum of 25 laps throughout the race weekend. The decision, announced by manufacturer Pirelli, follows an in-depth analysis of the compounds used in 2024, where several tires — particularly the front left — reached critical levels of wear. With the sprint scheduled for November 29 and the main race on November 30, the FIA aims to reduce structural risk and ensure maximum safety for the drivers.
Pirelli explained that the unique characteristics of the Lusail circuit, combined with high-speed corners, create exceptional stress on the tires, making this new limit necessary. Last year, multiple sets showed extreme degradation, signaling the need for immediate corrective action. As a result, teams will be forced to rethink their strategy, especially in qualifying and the sprint race, where tire management may become just as important as raw pace.
As Qatar prepares to host Formula 1, the championship moves into its final stretch with two key stops before Lusail. This weekend features the Las Vegas Grand Prix, followed by the season finale in Abu Dhabi one week after Qatar. With the title already decided, attention now shifts to how teams adapt to the lap-limit rule and how this restriction may influence the outcome of the remaining races of the season.
