OpenAI will enable adult content in ChatGPT only for verified adults starting in December, under an age-gating scheme aligned with its principle of “treating adults as adults.” The change follows a period of stricter barriers intended to protect users with mental-health risks; now, with reinforced safeguards, the company says it can relax restrictions without compromising safety.
It also plans to offer more control over the assistant’s tone and personality to make it more approachable and expressive—something the company had already signaled. Age verification will combine automated signals with additional processes when doubts arise, and in those cases the system will default to the under-18 experience until the user proves they are of age.
OpenAI notes it is building an age-prediction framework and parental controls, and that in certain countries it may request official ID to unlock adult capabilities; the goal is to clearly separate minor and adult experiences and keep graphic sexual content blocked for young users. For the industry, the move opens the door to new verticals (emotional companionship, romantic role-play, adult sex education) but also to significant challenges: regulatory compliance by jurisdiction, app-store policies, safety audits, abuse prevention, report traceability, and mechanisms against fake accounts. In practice,
OpenAI anticipates a gradual rollout with visible notices, configuration options, and the ability to report interactions that cross the line; success will depend on robust verification, a very low error rate in the minor filter, and an adult experience that preserves consent, clear boundaries, and controls a click away.
