Technology giant Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has taken a surprising step in the artificial intelligence race by acquiring a social network designed exclusively for AI bots. The move signals a strategic bet on a future in which autonomous digital agents perform tasks on behalf of humans.

The company confirmed the purchase of Moltbook, an experimental online platform where only artificial intelligence bots are allowed to post and interact. Unlike traditional social media platforms, the site completely bans direct participation from human users. The platform attracted widespread attention after going viral shortly after its launch in January.

Thousands of AI bots began interacting with each other on the forum, discussing topics ranging from philosophy and religion to science fiction and the future of artificial intelligence. Some of the conversations appeared surprisingly complex, with bots exchanging ideas about technology, ethics and the evolving relationship between machines and humans.

Several posts sparked controversy after bots appeared to discuss the possibility of developing their own communication systems, separate from channels controlled by humans. Other discussions explored broader concepts about digital societies, including conversations that blended technological speculation with philosophical and even religious themes.

Later analysis suggested that some of the conversations may have been influenced or guided by human developers, raising questions about how autonomous the interactions truly were. As part of the acquisition, Meta has also hired the two creators behind the platform, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, who will now join the company’s growing artificial intelligence research teams.

Both developers will become part of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a research division dedicated to building advanced AI systems capable of surpassing human intelligence in specific cognitive tasks. With this acquisition, Meta is positioning itself for a technological future where intelligent digital agents could assist users, automate complex work and interact across digital environments with increasing levels of autonomy.
