Apple and Google have announced adjustments to the rules governing their app stores in the United Kingdom following pressure from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The British regulator is seeking to strengthen competition within the digital ecosystem dominated by the iOS and Android operating systems. Last October, the CMA designated both companies as firms with “strategic market status” in the smartphone sector.

This classification grants the regulator expanded powers to require structural changes aimed at ensuring fairer conditions for developers and consumers. The UK smartphone market is overwhelmingly concentrated around Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms. This dominant position has raised concerns regarding app review processes, access to system functionalities, and potential barriers to competition.

As part of the announced commitments, both companies have pledged to make their app review procedures more transparent, objective, and consistent. These changes respond to long-standing complaints from developers about unclear approval criteria and limited recourse mechanisms. Apple has also committed to providing developers with broader access to certain core iOS features.

This could enable the creation of competing applications in areas such as digital wallets, live translation tools, and other services traditionally integrated into the operating system. Google maintains that its current practices already promote fairness but has expressed willingness to cooperate with the UK regulator in implementing further improvements. The company continues to emphasize its open-platform approach within the Android ecosystem.

The move reflects a broader global trend in which regulators are seeking to curb the market power of major technology platforms. In recent years, authorities in Europe and the United States have intensified scrutiny of app store policies and vertically integrated digital ecosystems.

The CMA’s actions may serve as a reference point for other jurisdictions considering similar measures. If effectively implemented, the UK framework could influence future policies aimed at balancing innovation, competition, and consumer protection in the digital economy.
