Estonia summoned a senior Russian diplomat on Friday following a serious airspace violation that has raised alarms along NATO’s eastern flank. According to Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace without authorization and remained for about twelve minutes over the Gulf of Finland. Foreign Minister Margus

Tsahkna described the incursion as an “unprecedented and blatant intervention,” noting that Russia has already violated Estonian airspace four times this year. He emphasized, however, that this latest incident is particularly serious due to the simultaneous involvement of three military aircraft. Tsahkna stated that “Russia’s increasing border provocations and aggressive behavior must be met with a swift intensification of political and economic pressure,” urging European partners and NATO allies to maintain a firm stance.

According to Estonian authorities, the Russian aircraft had no filed flight plans, flew with their transponders turned off, and maintained no radio contact with air traffic control. The jets only withdrew after Italian F-35 fighters, deployed under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, were scrambled to intercept them. Estonia, like its Baltic neighbors Latvia and Lithuania, does not have its own combat air force, relying instead on rotating NATO allies to secure its airspace.

Following the incident, Estonia’s Foreign Ministry immediately delivered a formal note of protest to the chargé d’affaires of the Russian Embassy in Tallinn, stressing that the episode represents a serious escalation of tensions in the region. The airspace violation came just days after more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, further heightening concerns among countries bordering Russia.

Several Western officials have suggested that Moscow is “testing NATO’s resolve” through calculated provocations. Tsahkna reiterated that Estonia expects a strong and coordinated response from the international community to deter future hostile actions and safeguard stability in Eastern Europe.
