Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that Ukraine’s recent counteroffensive in the eastern Donetsk region has achieved significant success, with forces reclaiming key areas previously occupied by Russian troops. In a video address on Thursday, Zelensky stated that Ukrainian soldiers have liberated around 160 square kilometers of territory since the start of the operation near the coal-mining city of Dobropillya. He clarified that while these zones have been “cleared” of Russian forces, they have not yet been formally brought under Ukrainian administrative control.

The president did not specify when the territorial gains were made but emphasized that Russia had “suffered thousands of losses” during the battles. “Ukraine is lawfully defending its positions and its country,” Zelensky stressed. While Kyiv celebrates these advances, Moscow has maintained a show of strength. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that more than 700,000 Russian soldiers are currently deployed along the front lines in Ukraine, in what analysts see as an attempt to project resilience and military pressure despite setbacks in certain sectors.

The Ukrainian military-affiliated portal DeepState reported that Russian forces made rapid gains near Dobropillya last month, although many of those gains have been rolled back in recent weeks by the Ukrainian counteroffensive. At the same time, they acknowledged that Russia has achieved limited advances in other areas in recent months, underscoring the complexity of the battlefield situation. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s capital faced renewed aerial threats. Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv on Thursday after debris from a downed Russian drone fell in several areas.

According to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration, fragments struck multiple locations, including a street in the central Shevchenkivskyi district, damaging parts of the overhead power network used by electric buses. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that drone parts also landed in another district of the capital, though initial reports indicated no casualties. Local authorities warned that the risk of further attacks remains and urged residents to stay alert to air raid warnings.

These latest developments highlight the highly dynamic and volatile nature of the war in Ukraine. While Ukrainian forces report strategic gains in Donetsk, Russia maintains a massive military presence on the front and continues to strike targets inside the country. International observers note that the conflict is now in a phase of high intensity, where front lines can shift rapidly and every military move carries significant political and humanitarian consequences.
